A Bonsai Progression:

Ready To Go

This  group of plants shows how all bonsai start-as plants. Some people start their bonsai from seedlings, but it takes a long time for most plants to even get halfway to being a convincing bonsai. Portulacaria grows best from cuttings, so the grower starts clippings in pots. At some point, the grower looks at the plant and decides if it is showing any interesting features. If not, the grower can either leave it to keep growing, plant it in the ground to see if it develops better that way, or put it in the “just a plant” pile.
The small pot is one single cutting allowed to grow wild, the bigger pot is a group of cuttings. The small pot is showing an interesting trunk development and is ready to move on to the next stage, whereas the clump is still boring and is being left alone to grow.
